A basic tutorial in using grove

Hit start and click on run. Type in as shown to run the program ‘telnet’ and have it go to the address grove.ufl.edu (type in telnet://grove.ufl.edu).

Type in casa in the login. If you happen to type the username or the password incorrectly as I did, you have to start over, hitting delete will produce the ^H and it will still be incorrect, even if you hit delete as many times is it would take to erase what you typed. Also, the password will not appear as you type it.

After logging in, you will come into this screen. To check the email, you will use a program called pine. Type in pine to run the program and hit enter.

This is the main menu of PINE program. Everything done in this program will be done by keyboard and each command can be executed by typing the characters shown on the left, C for compose message, I for message index...etc...

Hitting I will bring you into this menu, which contains all the messages in the inbox, one of the three folders we have (the other two are saved messages and sent mail, you can hit L in the previous menu to view them ). The ones marked N on the left are new. There are commands as shown below, R for reply, F for forwarding the email, D for delete, etc... If you delete a message, there will be a D on the left, in the same column as the N for new. To take off the marker, hit U for undelete.

Hitting C will compose the email. There are nicknames for our email list. type in officers to email all the officers, emails to email all of the members. Typing the nicknames into 'To:" will reveal who the letter is sent to (showing all the hundreds of members), putting it into Cc or Bcc will not show who the email is sent to (do one or the other when sending an email to all the members). Subject is subject...and then below "---- Message Text -----" is where you type the body of your email.
All of the commands shown on the bottom requires you to use the control command. So, ^C means hold down control, and then hold down c and you will be asked if you want to cancel the email, hitting ^X (control x) will give you the option to send the email.
If you wish to postpone the email, hit control O. Next time you hit C to compose an email, you will be asked if you want to continue the postponed one. Or, you can highlight the text, right click to copy, and paste it into Word or something. When you want to write the email again, copy the email, type in who you went to send it to, hit enter a few times until the cursor is in the body of the email and right click to paste your message.
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
If you wish to forward an email sent to us, hit F and in the Cc or Bcc, type in emails. Make any changes to the subject, type anything in the body, and send away. Use your best judgment as to what emails to forward to everyone.
When you want to quit, be at any menu and hit Q. It will ask you if you want to delete any emails if you have any emails that you marked to be deleted.
Once in a while, the grove computer system may send you a message and you'll get some messy text on your screen. This may happen if you send an email to someone and the email bounces back to us. Usually their messages aren't important :) so just hit any key and don't panic.
